Microvascular decompression (MVD) is a surgery to relieve abnormal compression of a cranial nerve. It is performed to treat trigeminal neuralgia, glossopharyngeal neuralgia, and hemifacial spasm. Medications often provide initial relief, but may become ineffective or cause serious side effects.
